The 41-year-old star in the city of Kisumu as part of a Comic Relief visit, when a car almost careered into him and three homeless boys.

Dermot was sleeping rough with the youngsters as he filmed a segment for Comic Relief, when the car crashed into a nearby ditch as they slept n their makeshift beds.

Luckily, Dermot and the boys were unharmed in the accident but were badly shaken following the near miss.

Tweeting about the incident, Comic Relief support staff on the charity trip said Dermot had a "lucky escape".

They also highlighted the fact that this is the sort of danger that the young boys face every single night by sleeping on the streets.

"It’s an incredibly vulnerable place to sleep which is why they stick together," they posted.

"The cars, motorbikes and rickshaws are so close the noise is something to behold. A car has crashed into a ditch feet away from the boys.

"Everyone is fine, but a big lucky escape. Shaken up by the near miss the boys are chatting with @radioleary – main topics snow and Arsenal.

"Despite noisy stragglers from a bar milling past, Dermot and the little men are finally settling."

X Factor host Dermot later tweeted: "Thanks for all the support for the last 24 hours here in Kenya @rednoseday met some pretty special little fellas."
