Google to hit pause on Flash ads in Chrome on September 1

This article, Google to hit pause on Flash ads in Chrome on September 1, originally appeared on ZDNet.com. source Google will hammer one more nail in Flash’s coffin with a feature that will soon prevent many Flash ads from displaying in Chrome desktop. The feature was rolled out to Chrome beta in June and will become generally available on September 1.  While Google won’t block Flash in Chrome outright, it will only allow it to play “central content” like videos while pausing peripheral content such as Flash animations. Google said yesterday that the feature will mean “pausing many Flash ads”.  Chrome users will be able to choose to run the Flash ads if they want, but they’ll need to manually enable that in Chrome’s content settings. Amazon too has chosen September 1 to step serving Flash ads on amazon.com, citing changes to Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari that limit Flash content. Google has described its shift away from Flash as a means of reducing...

New Android Flaw Lets Hackers Into Your Phone With Just a Text

The best defense against any of your gadgets becoming flooded with malware has always been personal vigilance. “Hmm, this app looks sketchy and is from a third-party app store I’ve never heard of. NOPE!” But a new vulnerability, discovered by security experts at Zimperium, can attack your phone with just a text. According to Zimperium researcher Joshua Drake via NPR, here’s how this scary bit of malicious hacking happens: The bad guy creates a short video, hides the malware inside it and texts it to your number. As soon as it’s received by the phone, Drake says, “it does its initial processing, which triggers the vulnerability. The real culprit here is our endless thirst for convenience and Hangouts, Google’s SMS alternative. Because Hangouts automatically processes video so it’s ready in your gallery, the malicious code enters your phone without you even clicking on the text. So essentially, you receive one malicious text and your smartpho...

Image
Google invaded the privacy of a Montreal woman by showing her sitting outside of her house with “part of her breast exposed,” and must pay her compensation, a judge ruled this month. According to a 17-page decision, Maria Pia Grillo suffered shock and embarrassment when she looked up her house using Google Maps’ Street View feature in 2009 and discovered an image that shows her leaning forward and exposing cleavage. The original image, and a subsequent blurred version, can be seen in these Google Street View images published this week by the tabloid, Journal de Montreal (the “after” version is bottom left): Even though the original image, which was snapped by one of Google’s camera-equipped cars, blurred out her face, the rest of the picture provided enough information to identify her. Two years later, Grillo started legal proceedings against Google to “blur” the rest of her, as well as her license plate and address. She also demanded the company pay $45,000 for emotional dama...
