Homeless cat saves baby from freezing by snuggling to keep it warm

It's hero cat, part two.

Because dogs have been getting far too much adorable attention in 2015 (see: dog rides bus alone), Masha the cat decided to save an abandoned baby from freezing to death with the warmth of her little, furry body.

According to Central European News, Masha stumbled across the baby, a boy no more than 12 weeks old, in a cardboard box left in the streets of Obninsk, Russia and climbed in to warm and protect him. The cat also meowed to get the attention of passersby.

“The baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha … he was not damaged by the experience,” a hospital spokesman told Central European News.

Irna Lavora, a nearby resident who often looked after the cat, discovered Masha and the baby.

“She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” Lavora said. "Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over and she wanted to protect the child."

The baby was rushed to a local hospital — and later declared completely healthy — but Masha was not happy about leaving her adopted son, and she attempted to follow the baby into the ambulance, Ruptly Video Agency reports. Residents also say that the cat waited on the street for several hours for the ambulance to return.

But Masha will be just fine — she is currently being spoiled rotten by her town for being the hero they didn't deserve but needed.
